ALAMEDA PARKS & OPEN SPACES

There’s an abundance of parks and open spaces in Alameda. From the beach and bay-side trails to playgrounds and sports courts - you’ll find the perfect spot for whatever type of activity you have in mind.

Alameda Recreation and Park Department (ARPD) supports 21 parks serving more than 15,000 people annually. “ARPD offers a broad array of programs, camps, classes, community events, and park and facility management to empower people of all abilities and ages.” Learn more about ARPD here.

Parks on the Main Island

Washington Park

Located on the SW end of Alameda, Washington Park​ flanks Crown Memorial State Beach, and is a hugely popular park in Alameda for sports, with its tennis courts, basketball courts and baseball field, picnics, and even features a large play structure for younger children. Two dog parks (one for small dogs; one for large dogs) can be found here as well. The park is divided into upper and lower sections. Stop at the top of the steps for a peek at the bay through the trees.

Lincoln Park

Where can you find pickleball courts​ on the main island in Alameda? That would be in Lincoln Park! Established in 1908, Lincoln Park is located on the east side of Alameda on High Street at Santa Clara Avenue. Lincoln Park​ is home to a pool, a rose garden, play structures, and baseball parks. You can even enjoy a game of bocce ball and a picnic at the John Ratto Bocce Courts, located within the park. Lincoln Park is a popular destination in Alameda due to the diversity of its amenities and activities.

Franklin Park

Franklin Park​ was established in 1922, and is located just west of Grand St. in the Gold Coast neighborhood. It provides visitors with two playgrounds (one for toddlers and one for older children), tennis courts, sports fields, and a swimming pool that is managed by the Alameda Swimming Pool Association.

Jean Sweeney Open Space Park

Jean Sweeney Open Space Park​ is bordered by Constitution Way, Atlantic Avenue and Sherman Street in west Alameda, and is located on the former Alameda Beltline Railroad property. The 25-acre park was officially opened In December 2018, with a ribbon-cutting celebration. The park features walking trails with benches, a picnic area, outdoor pavilion, and a playground with a zipline for kids. “Future phases of the park will add a community garden, an outdoor classroom and hiking trails through woodland areas.” (Alameda Sun)

Estuary Park

Just east of Alameda Point and the Main Street Ferry Terminal on the West End of Alameda you will find athletic fields and community park space of Estuary Park. “Amenities include a synthetic turf baseball diamond and soccer field known as the Challenger Field, designed and prioritized for youth and adults of all physical and mental abilities, plus one lighted synthetic turf rectangular field for youth soccer, football, rugby and lacrosse.”

Littlejohn Park

Located in north-central Alameda on Buena Vista Avenue, Littlejohn Park​ offers a multi-purpose sports field, basketball courts, a recreation center, bathrooms, a picnic area, and BBQ pits, Littlejohn Park Playground playground recently opened, and is “Alameda's newest all-inclusive playground where children of all physical, emotional and developmental abilities can play and learn together.”

McKinley Park

In northeast Alameda, at Buena Vista Ave. and Walnut St., you’ll find McKinley Park/Thompson Field. Established in 1908, the park features a playground, basketball courts, volleyball courts, a picnic area and a recreation center. Thompson Field is a multi-use sports field.

Rittler Park

Rittler Park​ is found at Otis and Grand in the southern-central section of Alameda, next to Will C. Wood Middle School. The park has a large, multi-purpose athletic field, and is the home to Alameda Little League. The park also has shuffleboard and tennis courts.

Longfellow Park

Established in 1947, Longfellow Park​ is located on Linden Street between Haight and Lincoln Avenues on the west side of Alameda. The park features a playground, picnic area with BBQ pits, basketball courts, tennis courts, a recreation center, and a small grass field perfect for a volleyball game (bring your own net!).

Woodstock Park

Established 1938, Woodstock Park​ is located on Cypress and Brush Streets, east of Third Street, on the west side of Alameda. It is close to the Academy of Alameda, Alameda Boys & Girls Club, and the Nea Community Learning Center. This park features a multi-purpose field, picnic area, recreation center, paved walking trails, and a playground.

Ida Krusi Memorial Park

Established in 1937, the Ida Krusi Memorial (Krusi) Park​ is located on the corner of Otis Drive and High Street on the southeast portion of Alameda. It is close to the Bay Farm Island Bridge and adjacent to Otis Elementary School. The park features three baseball diamonds, two tennis courts, two playground structures, and a large grassy area.

State Beaches:

Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach

Crown Memorial State Beach​ and surrounding area is a favorite spot for walking, windsurfing, kayaking, and cycling. In fact, Boardsports California​ offers windsurfing rentals and lessons from their small facility along the shore. There are also playgrounds, picnic areas, tennis courts, and two dog parks just north of the beach. Crab Cove

Crab Cove, part of Crown Memorial State Beach, is a popular area for picnics, dog walks, and fun on the beach. The Crab Cove Visitor Center and Aquarium, an education center with interactive exhibits about marine life, celebrates 40 years in 2019. The Cove also offers a large grass playing field and its own small beach. During the summer, the Cove is home to several free concerts, featuring live music, food, wine and beer.
