Bushrod

In 2007 Oakland’s Bushrod neighborhood was named the nation’s hottest housing market.

The Bushrod neighborhood of Oakland is found between Telegraph Ave. (to the east) and Martin Luther King Jr. Way (to the west), Woolsey Street (to the north) and Highway 24 (to the south). The neighborhood butts up against South Berkeley. The Rockridge neighborhood is located to the east, and Temescal to the south. Lake Merritt, downtown Oakland, and Joaquin Miller Park are all about a ten minute drive away.

With a central location and diversity of property types, Bushrod is a desirable area for homebuyers looking to put down roots in the city of Oakland. The neighborhood features everything from multi-unit buildings to craftsman and tudor style homes built in the early 1900s, and it is mostly residential.

A big presence in the neighborhood is the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, formerly known as Oakland Children’s Hospital, which U.S. News & World Report ranks as one of the nation’s "Best Hospitals."

Also within the neighborhood, you’ll find Bushrod Park (one of the largest parks in North Oakland at 10.12 acres) and the Bushrod Recreation Center, which was constructed in 2000 and is equipped with a gymnasium, weight room, kitchen, play structure, lighted basketball and tennis courts, lighted football/soccer fields, baseball/softball field, and picnic areas.

Just outside of the Bushrod district, you’ll find one of Oakland’s most popular eateries, Lois the Pie Queen, a corner cafe “serving up Southern hospitality with its popular fried chicken, pies & breakfast items.”

Other eatery options in the area include Kingfish Pub & Cafe, Oakland’s Very Own Tavern and Eatery, Mariposa Baking Company, Nick’s Pizza, Cafe Colucci and Addis (both Ethiopian), OB Town Korean Chicken, and It’s All Good Bakery. The many shops and restaurants of the Temescal neighborhood are just a hop, skip and a jump away as well.

The Bushrod neighborhood offers a strong sense of community, a central location, and proximity to transportation options. The Ashby BART station is just north of the neighborhood border about a 10 - 15 minute walk away. (Note: on weekends, the City of Berkeley sponsors a popular flea market in the parking lot.) The Rockridge BART station is just east of the neighborhood border, and is about a 15-20 minute walk away. The closest casual carpool pick-up is near the Rockridge BART.
