Oakmore

Oakmore “was built in the 1920s and 1930s for people who worked in San Francisco and took the Key Route to work.” (Wikipedia)

The Oakmore neighborhood is located at the base of the Oakland hills, north of the Dimond district, northeast of Glenview, and southeast of Montclair. It is a six minute drive to the shops and restaurants of Montclair Village, an eight minute drive to Redwood Regional Park, and a thirteen drive to downtown Oakland and Lake Merritt.

Oakmore is a quiet, mostly residential neighborhood. A good portion of the 94-acre Dimond Canyon is located in the Oakmore district. The Bridgeview trail runs through the canyon, is about 2 miles long, and can be accessed off Monterey Blvd. Montclair Golf Enterprises is located here as well. Dimond Park is located in the southern part of the canyon, in the Dimond district, and provides the community with a recreational pool, picnic tables, BBQ grills, and tennis courts.

The Key System (the public transportation system that predates BART) was a primary user of the Leimert Bridge, found in the Oakmore district off of Park Blvd. The bridge allowed for Oakmore to become a residential area.

“In 1926, developer Walter H. Leimert completed the largest structure in this new Oakmore Highlands subdivision. When finished, the Leimert Bridge, named for the boulevard it supports as wells as the developer who commissioned it was the largest single span bridge of its time. The elegantly arched structure connected Park Boulevard and Piedmont to the nearby hills, which had been isolated by Dimond Canyon on the northwest and the bed of the former Palo Seco Creek (now the Warren Freeway – Highway 13) to the east. The new, reliable transportation route into these hills transformed them from bucolic scenery into a desirable and convenient location to live.” (OakmoreHomes.com)

Shopping and dining opportunities are close by in the nearby Glenview, Montclair, and Dimond neighborhoods. Busy Park Blvd is only a three minute drive away.

Oakmore is filled with curvy, hilly residential streets. The neighborhood includes “houses designed by several of the leading architects of the period, including Miller & Warnecke, Chester H. Treichel and Guy Brown. The architectural styles range from Monterey Colonial to Mediterranean, Rustic Tudor and Spanish. Many of the homes we see around us today are also blessed with spectacular gardens which express landscape styles of the early century as well as the fruitful efforts of homeowners over time.” (Oakmorehomes.com)

The Fruitvale BART station is a fifteen minute drive away. I-580 is just south of the neighborhood, and Highway 13 just north. The Transbay V bus picks up at Park Blvd and Emerson and will get you to San Francisco. There is also a casual carpool pickup in the same area.

Oakmore is a desirable area in which to reside, with its well-established streets and friendly neighborhood vibe. Oakmore feels private, quiet, and comfortable.
