Kymberly Miller - Executive Director
Children’s Fairyland & Alameda Resident

Kymberly Miller has been an Alameda resident since 2012. In August 2019, after an 11+ year career at Girl Scouts of Northern California, Kymberly stepped into the role of executive director of Children’s Fairyland in Oakland. Fairyland, a storybook theme park, has been providing educational and community opportunities for Bay Area families since 1950. Kymberly recently shared some of her favorite things about Alameda with us.

Tell us how you came to call Alameda your hometown.

I moved to Oakland in 1988 and went to Mills College. We had bought a house in Oakland in 1995. At one point, we found ourselves going to Alameda a lot, for bike rides & Crown Beach visits. Our son was 10 at the time. We knew it to be safe, & since that’s what you think about when you have a kid, we threw caution to the wind, sold our Oakland home, & took a risk. We rented in Alameda for a year while we looked for the perfect house. We found it - a 1918 Colonial in the Bronze Coast.

What do you love most about Alameda?

I love the small town quirk - it makes it unique. We love our neighborhood and our friendly neighbors. Most of our neighbors have lived here for a while. I also love that I can walk to the Alameda 4th of July Parade route, which I do every year. I can walk to Park Street in 15 minutes, Webster Street in 10 minutes, and the beach in 7 minutes. I also love that Alamedans step up and keep an eye on our kids, and that it feels safe for them to run around the neighborhood.

What would you consider your perfect date night in Alameda?

Well, I’d start out on the old base, and would watch the sunset from one of the breweries or Rock Wall Wine Company. I love the atmosphere there; it’s one of my favorite places to hang out in Alameda. After watching the sunset, we’d go to either Hang 10 Boiler or Ono Hawaii BBQ at Alameda Landing for dinner. Then, we’d catch a movie at the Alameda Theatre and end the evening with a nightcap at Lucky 13.

What’s one of your favorite things about your new position at Fairyland?

I can look out my office window and see mini horses! I get to talk to them every morning!
